The Urban Garden DIY Grow Dome: Building a Sustainable Lifeboat

Our industrial model has resulted in consumers living in a very linear way, where we basically take, make, use and dispose. What if we could design in a more circular manner?” ― Space 10

The Urban Garden Grow Dome is designed to create a small oasis in urban settings where space comes at a premium, such as backyards and roof-tops. Standing tall and optimizing growing room, the geodesic garden grow dome empowers people to produce fresh fruits and veggies within reach of their dinner table.

The garden grow dome kit design focuses on making assembly easy and intuitive for just about anyone equipped with some simple ratcheting tools. Modern pre-fabrication makes it a snap for you DIY folks out there to convert ordinary spaces into lush edible gardens in a sustainable, digitally controlled environment that’s fun and easy to maintain.

Ikea set Build Your Own Garden Grow Dome
Once you’ve erected your free-standing geodome, you’re ready for the next exciting step, to construct the inside of your Growroom. Dome kits typically ship within 4-6 weeks, so it’s always an option to build your Growroom while waiting for shipment of your Grow Dome Kit to arrive. You can build your own Growroom in 17 easy steps by following instructions and downloading the cutting files for free right here.

All you need to construct your very own urban garden is 17 sheets of plywood, a rubber hammer, and access to a space with a CNC milling machine or laser cutter. The spherical Growroom measures approximately 9.2 x 8.2 feet and features 5 tiers on which to place planters filled with all kinds of plants, herbs and vegetables.

What’s a Sustainable Lifeboat™?
Sustainable Lifeboat™ is a generic food production farm model using drip irrigation systems for water conservation. The concept was initially researched and developed by feeding proven water saving products, through drip irrigation, to facilitate with growing of alternative food crops and herbs. This method expanded to include organic weed control and chicken farming, etc.

Author, researcher and founder of Sustainable Lifeboat™ Dr. Richard Alan Miller travels North America conducting ‘Urban Survival Skills Workshops’ with his co-instructor Mat Stein. Dr. Miller believes that the principles and practices associated with building a sustainable lifeboat will prove “priceless” during times of financial instability. Case in point, should the electricity grid and water distribution systems collapse.  Vist their FaceBook Page here.
